Tech City has it all! Take your favorite subject and incorporate it into fun and exciting computer activities. Campers have the option of creating a video/short film, an animated short film, an audio recording project, a Flash video game or a web site. We have the perfect combination of instruction and hands-on experience. Tech City instructors will help campers navigate the latest technology and allow them to complete a project that showcases their newly learned skills. This is a wonderful opportunity for students to sharpen their basic computer skills, all the while learning about exciting and new computer programs. DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY Grades: 6th-8th CLASS CLOSED
With today’s technology, taking your own professional quality photos is a snap! From getting the settings on the camera right to digital photo editing on a computer, to printing your photos, this class will show you how. Have you ever wanted to take your head and put it on your dog’s body or any other similar crazy idea? Have you ever wanted to know how to remove that pesky RED EYE from your photos? Have you wondered how they make those super models look so super? Experience the magic of Adobe Photoshop and more! This class will also cover free software alternatives. Students must provide their own digital camera, all other materials covered in the price of tuition.

JUST FOR THE FUN OF IT
URBAN WEAR – Clothing Design Grades: 3rd-8th
Tired of the high cost of designer duds? Allow your budding fashionista to design the clothes they wear. Professional artist and urban wear designer Dick Woolery will teach students to take the ordinary and turn it into extraordinary. Student designers will learn how successful fashion designers develop their unique look and apply it to fabrics and accessories. This is a hands-on class for those who wish to enhance their artistic skills, learn new techniques to make wearable art and how to use various mediums to create today’s hottest trends in urban wear fashion. Students will be using acrylic paint, latex paints, spray paints and oil paint pens. At the end of the class students will have their own personally designed hat and t-shirt. Cost includes all materials.

CACHING GONE WILD! Grades: 4TH-6th CLASS CLOSED
Geocaching treasure hunt meets popular television shows…SURVIVOR, FEAR FACTOR, SMARTER THAN A 5TH GRADER and the AMAZING RACE…with obstacles, geography, art, science & history riddles plus totems and more! Students will receive hands on experience using a Garmin GPS Unit to find hidden geocaches containing clues and or riddles that will need to be solved before proceeding to the next stage of the adventure. This will be a high octane day of fun, exploring, learning, surviving by wit and wisdom and teamwork. Participants must wear comfortable outdoor clothing and closed toed shoes.

Whether it is your first child or your fifth…you can never have enough help, information or friends! Due to popular demand, STAR Enrichment is once again offering the “Mommy and Me” class for toddlers and their parents. Join Mrs. Schulte as she leads you and your child through songs, dance, arts and crafts, playtime and more. Discussion topics will include insightful information and sharing on potty training, biting, discipline and setting, boundaries, sleep problems, new babies in the home, separation anxiety, parental stress and even how to interview a baby-sitter. This class is designed with the parent in mind, offering a nurturing environment where parents and child can play, learn, have fun, make new friends and share information on how to overcome the struggles of parenthood. Please bring a snack for yourself and your child as well as play clothes and closed toed shoes!

PET FIRST AID Grades: 2nd-8th
Parents & Kids! This class is designed to teach you how to provide emergency treatment for your pet, gain confidence and remain calm in an emergency. Students will learn and understand how to take proper emergency procedures until you can get your pet to a veterinarian. In this hands-on class, students will learn how to keep their pet healthy, safe, pest free, how to avoid seasonal problems, and what symptoms to watch for and why. Emphasis is on the common domestic pet such as cats and dogs while exotic animals and their care will also be discussed. Additionally, the class covers what makes an appropriate pet and how to select the right one for your family.

STUDY SKILLS Grades: 4th-8th
Okay, so report cards are home and you see room for improvement. How do you get it through your kid’s head that work needs to be organized, neat, timely and complete? And by the way, what does complete really mean? Let STAR help! In this expanded two part study skills/organizational class we will review many different ways for your child to make the academic experience easier. Children will learn how to take effective notes, test taking strategies, alternative study styles, how to use a dictionary and thesaurus and create a bibliography. Additionally children will learn how to organize their time, develop priority lists, read graphs and maps, plus how to use the table of contents and indexes of books to speed study and research skills. We will cover all this and much more to include foods that help with cognitive development and improve learning abilities. On the first day of class parents AND students are encouraged to bring a list of personal obstacles that children need help in overcoming. These will be addressed in a group discussion on the second day of class. Students will leave the class with a folder containing examples of skills reviewed during both classes to have on hand for future use.

SF AQUARIUM OF THE BAY & CRUISEGrades: 5th-8th CLASS CLOSED
Join STAR Education as we take a field trip to the amazing “Aquarium of the Bay” in San Francisco. “Aquarium of the Bay” features over 20,000 aquatic species including over 200 different species of sharks, rays, octopus, jelly fish, rock fish, flat fish, eels, sea stars and other aquatic animals. This facility located on the edge of Pier 39 boasts two signature tunnel tanks with moving sidewalks that total 300 feet. Students will ride in a luxury motor-coach to San Francisco, participate in a hands-on 2.5 hour class called “MICROSCOPE MAGIC AND PLANKTON POWER” where students use scientific equipment to explore the hydrology and planktonic life of the San Francisco Bay. Here students experience and learn the difference between animal and plant plankton, which are the beginning of the food web in marine habitats. In addition to this unique classroom opportunity, students will have a guided tour of the facility. After a wonderful time at the aquarium we take a bay cruise; along the historic San Francisco waterfront, under the Golden Gate Bridge, past Sausalito and Angel Island, around Alcatraz and by the Pier 39 sea lions. What a day! How often do you get to learn about marine biology at a world renown aquarium, get to stay dry while you are IN the bay and then ride on top of it?
Space is limited and is on a first come first serve basis. Students are to dress in “layers”, wear comfortable shoes and provide their own sack lunch. (There will be no time to purchase food at the cafeteria as we are on a tight schedule). STAR Enrichment will provide water and a snack for the bus ride.

SCIENCE TRAVELERS Grades: 1st–4th
WEEK 1 THE SCIENTIFIC METHOD What is it?, How does it work? How are we going to use it?, Why are we going to use it? and how will it help us get to know each other? This initial class will set the pace and be the basis of our discoveries and team work.
WEEK 2 FOSSILS! Students learn the importance of studying fossils, while exploring the work of paleontologists and create a trace fossil of their own.
WEEK 3 EDIBLE DNA! Learn all about DNA, how it works, what it does, and the history of its discovery. Students will construct edible DNA molecules while understanding the science behind them.
WEEK 4 STRIPED PUZZLES! Students learn how perception is shaped by our senses and how the brain functions. Students will see their perception challenged through optical illusions, while creating a double-sided jig-saw-type puzzle.
WEEK 5 GOO YUK INVESTIGATION!
Students will be acquainted with the three states of matter, and the distinct characteristics of each. Students will create an interesting polymer to examine!
WEEK 6 SOLAR POWER! Learn about the sun, how its energy can be used, and will harvest the Sun’s energy to create a UV bracelet. Students will also create a solargram to better illustrate the power of the sun.
WEEK 7 PAN FLUTE! Explore the properties of sound and create a new version of the traditional pan flute.
WEEK 8 CONSTELLATION NATION! Students learn about the life cycle of a star and create an exciting folding device used to examine constellations.

Archery combines concepts of physics, physical conditioning, and mental fitness in a precise sport. Join STAR’s professional basketball player and coach, Troy Selvey, to brush up on your playing skills before team try-outs. This class will focus on improving fundamentals of ball handling, passing, shooting, rebounding and footwork. Defensive and offensive strategies and skills will be improved just in time for the 08-09 boys season. This is a fun class for athletes of all abilities and takes place in a positive, relaxed, no-pressure environment.
Coach Troy Selvey is a graduate of Sacramento State University and has recently returned to the Sacramento area after five years of professional basketball overseas, playing power forward and center and winning Most Valuable Player for the U.K. team, Essex & Herts Leopards. He has also coached for the Amateur Athletic Union basketball program for three years as well as coaching for various Sacramento Kings basketball camps. STAR Education is thrilled to have Coach Selvey join our team of dedicated educators.

MUSIC PROGRAMS
STAR Enrichment is pleased to announce the fall music enrichment program open to all children in the community. This music enrichment program is offered through STAR Education, a 501c3 Non-profit educational enrichment program that supports and enhances the school day curriculum of your local school. This music program is under the direction of Margie Hartung, classic music instructor for STAR Education. Ms. Hartung is an experienced instructor of classical violin and viola studies. STAR music enrichment is designed to be a year round program wherein children gain the most benefit from attending all classes throughout the year. All concert dates and information will be forwarded to families by Ms. Hartung. Students must supply their own instrument, shoulder rest and music stand. Instruments may be rented at McLaughlin School of Music in Loomis, The Music Store in Rocklin, Northridge Music Center in Citrus Heights or Encore Music in Auburn.
Please note that by registering your student now, their registration will remain active throughout the school year and you will be held financially responsible regardless of your child’s attendance. Tuition for the entire year is $351 (for 27 classes plus concerts) which will be broken down into three separate payments of $117. Tuition is due on September 30th, January 7th and March 10th. A late fee of $10 will be assessed after five business days past the due date. Students MAY NOT attend class if their tuition is not current.

Discover the joy of being a part of a musical group by joining this beginning to intermediate violin class. Learn how to play the violin or enhance your skills by playing in a group setting. STAR YOUTH ORCHESTRA is open to all orchestral string, woodwind, brass and percussion students in Junior High and High School.
